African drums

On Wednesday 24th October, the whole school went to the hall, to enjoy some African drumming and story telling.  We were told a little story about Africa. There were two girls who followed a follow bird. The bird leaded them to a honey hive, that was full of honey.  The two girls were surprised, and took a jar of it. On the way home the girl that was holding the honey dropped it they where both shocked, and the girl who was holding it said "why does everything bad happen to me?"  We clapped to drumming rhythms, and learned some African words, and some year groups even danced.  It was enjoyable and  everyone had a fun day.

Bushmead perform Shakespeare

On Tuesday 23rd October Bushmead Primary school came to perform a Shakespeare play for the Shakespeare school festival. They performed 12th night because the play inspired them.
The actors and actresses performed very well,  and made the play their own.  It was a little confusing because some girls played boys and some boys played girls (very confusing isn't it!)That's what they did in Shakespeare's times though.
Bushmead's performance was very funny and we loved the way they knew their parts off by heart.

Fairtrade at St Joe's

Sinead and Erin interviewed Mrs.Killian  about fair trade in the school.
We asked-

When did we sign up for fairtrade?
Last year a letter came into school, so we thought it would be a good challenge for us to aim to get the Fairtrade School Award by July 2013.

What are our aims as a fairtrade school?
We want to promote fairtrade products with staff, parents and pupils and to understand the important work fairtrade farmers do.

What has already been accomplished over the past year?

We shared School Assemblies, visitors and speakers to school, a banana farmer from St Vincent, the tuck shop and coffee mornings, as well each class electing a Fairtrade  representative, and we have done fairtrade learning log.

We are currently working of a fairtrade display, and our next fairtrade tuck shop will be on Monday 22nd October.

European Day 2012

On Wednesday 26th September 2012 St.Josephs Junior School took part in the European day.  We dressed in clothes reflecting the colour of European flags and all Year groups had different, very exiting things to do thanks to Mrs Bingham, our MFL teacher.   Some built models of the Eiffel tower, or L'Arc de Triomphe, some played French board games, and others did pastel drawings of French buildings.   Year 3 produced lovely art work inspired by Matisse.   Everyone loved their EU passport books!  Thank you to Mrs Bingham for all her hard work, and to everyone for participating so fully in the event.

School Council Trip

This year's school council  and Mrs Killian are out in Dunstable at a Mass to represent St. Josephs Catholic  Junior School. The mass takes place at the beginning of every year so all the schools can get together and share their faith and kindness.  Also they can talk about what they do in school and how they show their love for God.
It is the School Councillors first official engagement representing the school, and we are sure they will do us proud.

New Additions to the prayer garden

I said I would keep you updated if there are any new additions to the prayer garden. So can you guess why I'm writing? When I wrote last week the new "grass" wasn't down but when I went down to the garden today the new grass has all being laid down.  The workers have been very busy, and the garden is beginning to take shape.   Mary has been re-painted, new pots have been laid and the bench is all ready. Classes have already been to visit and pray to Mary in this special month.
Can you tell the difference?

year five vauxhall day.

2 weeks ago year 5 had a day in the hall with people from GM/ Vauxhall.  First we did some research into   different countries -  America, Spain, Japan and United Kingdom, with plans to set up a factory plant in those countries.  We looked for locations, costs, work force etc to see where would be the best location.

After that,  we made a 3D truck and coloured it in.   Then we made a factory with paper and did a presentation on it.  We thank GM for  the  wonderful day and hope year 4 have the same experience.

The new school council

Again this term,  each class has elected a new school council member for the upcoming year.  Many wanted to be a member but everyone knows that there can only be one from each class.  Read on to find out more. Mrs Lee announced that we should have an election to make it fair for each candidate.  Interested candidates made speeches or presentations to their class, saying why they would make a great School council representative.  Each  pupil in their class then voted for the person they thought would be the best school council member. Each class teacher counted everyone's vote,  and the person who was chosen got crowned the class representative.'' YEAH ''!  Congratulations to them all.  We have no doubt they will work hard for their classes all year.

Walk to school.

This year,  St.Joseph's school is taking part in the international Walk to school month.  Mrs Lee thinks it is important that all her students should be well educated and healthy, so during October, once a week, on Thursday mornings, some of the staff have volunteered to meet and escort children to school.   This 15 minutes exercise is good for our health, helps us to get to know children from other year groups and will also cut down on traffic  outside the school gates on those mornings!   Who knows, maybe it will encourage more people to walk each day, even if only a part of their journey.  Will you join us?
We walk to school to safe the invirament.

The prayer garden

Two weeks ago our gardening club started work on our prayer garden. Mrs Naughton and the club (from all different year groups) went to Poplars garden centre to look for plants to brighten up our garden. Many ideas were given to Mrs Lee and we have agreed to put a shelter over our lady Mary to show respect. Benches were brought up, everyone was with the idea. Miss O'Leary's Grandad will be working in the garden to help make it our own. A Learning Log task is going out over the next couple of weeks for suggestions of prayers, poems or pictures to go on display.  We will keep you updated on the progress!

New offices

Over the summer holidays, Mrs Lee's old office was split in half so that one half would be Mrs Murphy's office, and Mrs Lee's has been extended.

Here is a picture of Mrs Murphy's new office.

Very nice Mrs Murphy.
Sadly we were not able to take a picture of Mrs Lee's office, due to the fact it isn't completed yet but when it is, we will take a picture of it, and maybe interview Mrs Lee and Mrs Murphy about their new work spaces.

Fruit and Veg

Do you ever wonder how to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day? Doctors recommend it!

To eat fruit and vegetables means to give yourself vitamin C. Vitamin C stops you from catching nasty diseases like scurvy! It also keeps your skin soft, shiny and smooth! So how do we fit it into fruit and veg into our routine? This is how!

Breakfast- Have a fruity drink! Try some O-mazing orange juice! Also sprinkle some fruity toppings on your cereal.
Lunch- Mix and match! Try some pasta with vegetables or a colourful fruit salad! Also remember breaktime is a opportunity to eat some fruit as well!
Dinner- Brighten up your plate with a rainbow of vegetables!

So munch away on some fabulous fruit or very healthy vegetables! An apple a day keeps the doctor away!
