Year 6 Poetry Trip

2 weeks ago a group of year 6 children went on a trip to the Luton Library Theatre in the town centre, to meet a poet form London.
While we were there he taught us about poems and some of his life. We learnt a variety of different things, such as how to build up our own poem.
He also read out one of his own poems, this is the poem:

Me poem
Me me me Me me me Me me me Me me Me me Me. That enough about me!

Eugene The Magician

Recently we had a visitor telling us about ANTI-BULLYING. His name is Eugene, and as a child, he had been bullied for 3 years. It would have stopped but he didn't tell the teacher and so that tells us to always tell other people if we're being bullied. If your friends turn their backs on you don't be offended,  but tell a teacher and it will be all over. If you don't, then the bullying might continue like it did for Eugene but even longer.

He did lots of tricks for every one and some volenteers helped by acting and it was hilarious.
Eugene told us
FACTS:TELL IF YOUR IN TROUBLE,YOUR NEVER ALONE ETC.

Advent!!!!

As you are aware we are starting Advent this week! Everyone is so excited for this wonderful event and cant wait to get their advent calenders out!Whether it is a:
Mars bar one, a galaxy one, a twix one or just a special calender with lots of chocolate shapes on- they're all so special!
Any way lets get off the subject of chocolate and move onto the true meaning of Christmas :
most people just think Christmas is all about presents and chocolate but they can think again!Although all presents are nice we all forget about Jesus being born by his mother mary. So before you open all your nice presents think of all the trouble Mary went through giving birth to Christ!

Our future mini bus!
The school council members have been working extremely hard to improve the school(not that they need any more). One of the greatest ideas is a school mini bus to escort the pupils were ever they need. Another incredible idea is to use the bars on the wall more often in P.E.

Judaism

Over the past 2 weeks, the whole school has been learning about the Jewish religion.  Each year groups have explored a different aspect of the faith, and we have taken great interest in their symbols, celebrations and beliefs. We have learned the ten commandments are really special to the Jewish people. They go to synagogue each Saturday and week days. At the synagogues the people have there own names on there seats but they dont have to sit there. Girls and ladies sit upstairs and boys and Men sit down stairs.

David the blind Paralympian

On Tuesday the 20th November,  David Clarke, the blind footballer, came to our school, along with his guide dog, Ned.  He told us all about his career being a footballer right since he was a young boy. Unfortunately he could not play for his school team, as he has been blind since he was born.  He has been captain of the England and Team GB football team and took part in the Paralymics in London this year.  He has now retired from international football, but we were very lucky to hear his inspirational story.   Thank you to Jennifer's dad for organising the visit.

The Nativity Play

This year 2012 some lucky children in year 5 were chosen to take part in the fabulous nativity play, which will be performed in St, Joseph's Catholic Church in December. The nativity play is obviously about the birth of Jesus at Christmas, but takes a slightly different approach to the story. We have been practicing after school on mondays but  it is about elizabeth!

Blog box

Each week, in Blog Club, we face the challenge of finding interesting topics to write about, and spend quite a bit of our time trying to come up with something! So we have had a brainwave!  Blog Boxes!

Every year group would get a blog box to be kept in their area.  When you write down on a piece of paper and put in some ideas for St.Josephs Junior School Bloggers.  St. Joe's Blog meet each week, to update the information about what's happening in  the school, and upload it here.   With the blog boxes, hopefully other children will share ideas and suggestions and some of those ideas will be picked-out and it will be written as a blog.
We are in the process of colourcoding the boxes, and will appear in your year group when they are ready!

He said he has been a pilot  for 25 years. He also said that the air ambulance is supported by a registered charity. We just about saw the doctors in thier orange suits.

It's all for the best and there are still so many songs to carry on learning it is so tiring!  We are nearly there though! Children have already paid their entrance money, and  extra for the  t-shirt (only if they want to buy on though). The deadline was today,  so we all hope that everyone has handed them in!

Frank Diamond interview

I'm sure everyone remembers Frank Diamond, who came to talk about the Year of Faith. If not, too bad! If so, good for you! Anyway we interviewed him about the Year of faith, and what it means, and here is what he said.
Q - Question
A- Answer

Q1.Why is there a Year of Faith?

A. Pope Benedict would like to re-energise the church, as well as a time to think about and reflect on our faith journeys and how it affects our local community and our national community.

Q2. How is it honouring God?

A.When we put our faith in action we are honouring God by serving others through caring, sharing and acts of charity in the home, school and parish.

Q3. How many prayers should we pray?

A. The little bits and pieces of everyday life is prayer in action, eg. Morning  prayer, prayer before meals, when we finish our meals, before we finish school, before we go to bed, when we share our gifts and talents, going to mass and listening to our parents and teachers.

On a personal note - Frank supports
 Man.United, Celtic and Ireland.

The whole school enjoyed spending time with Frank, and appreciated his enthusiasm for the Year of Faith.  Hopefully, it has inspired us all to put Faith in Action.

African drums

On Wednesday 24th October, the whole school went to the hall, to enjoy some African drumming and story telling.  We were told a little story about Africa. There were two girls who followed a follow bird. The bird leaded them to a honey hive, that was full of honey.  The two girls were surprised, and took a jar of it. On the way home the girl that was holding the honey dropped it they where both shocked, and the girl who was holding it said "why does everything bad happen to me?"  We clapped to drumming rhythms, and learned some African words, and some year groups even danced.  It was enjoyable and  everyone had a fun day.

Bushmead perform Shakespeare

On Tuesday 23rd October Bushmead Primary school came to perform a Shakespeare play for the Shakespeare school festival. They performed 12th night because the play inspired them.
The actors and actresses performed very well,  and made the play their own.  It was a little confusing because some girls played boys and some boys played girls (very confusing isn't it!)That's what they did in Shakespeare's times though.
Bushmead's performance was very funny and we loved the way they knew their parts off by heart.

Fairtrade at St Joe's

Sinead and Erin interviewed Mrs.Killian  about fair trade in the school.
We asked-

When did we sign up for fairtrade?
Last year a letter came into school, so we thought it would be a good challenge for us to aim to get the Fairtrade School Award by July 2013.

What are our aims as a fairtrade school?
We want to promote fairtrade products with staff, parents and pupils and to understand the important work fairtrade farmers do.

What has already been accomplished over the past year?

We shared School Assemblies, visitors and speakers to school, a banana farmer from St Vincent, the tuck shop and coffee mornings, as well each class electing a Fairtrade  representative, and we have done fairtrade learning log.

We are currently working of a fairtrade display, and our next fairtrade tuck shop will be on Monday 22nd October.

European Day 2012

On Wednesday 26th September 2012 St.Josephs Junior School took part in the European day.  We dressed in clothes reflecting the colour of European flags and all Year groups had different, very exiting things to do thanks to Mrs Bingham, our MFL teacher.   Some built models of the Eiffel tower, or L'Arc de Triomphe, some played French board games, and others did pastel drawings of French buildings.   Year 3 produced lovely art work inspired by Matisse.   Everyone loved their EU passport books!  Thank you to Mrs Bingham for all her hard work, and to everyone for participating so fully in the event.

School Council Trip

This year's school council  and Mrs Killian are out in Dunstable at a Mass to represent St. Josephs Catholic  Junior School. The mass takes place at the beginning of every year so all the schools can get together and share their faith and kindness.  Also they can talk about what they do in school and how they show their love for God.
It is the School Councillors first official engagement representing the school, and we are sure they will do us proud.

New Additions to the prayer garden

I said I would keep you updated if there are any new additions to the prayer garden. So can you guess why I'm writing? When I wrote last week the new "grass" wasn't down but when I went down to the garden today the new grass has all being laid down.  The workers have been very busy, and the garden is beginning to take shape.   Mary has been re-painted, new pots have been laid and the bench is all ready. Classes have already been to visit and pray to Mary in this special month.
Can you tell the difference?

year five vauxhall day.

2 weeks ago year 5 had a day in the hall with people from GM/ Vauxhall.  First we did some research into   different countries -  America, Spain, Japan and United Kingdom, with plans to set up a factory plant in those countries.  We looked for locations, costs, work force etc to see where would be the best location.

After that,  we made a 3D truck and coloured it in.   Then we made a factory with paper and did a presentation on it.  We thank GM for  the  wonderful day and hope year 4 have the same experience.

The new school council

Again this term,  each class has elected a new school council member for the upcoming year.  Many wanted to be a member but everyone knows that there can only be one from each class.  Read on to find out more. Mrs Lee announced that we should have an election to make it fair for each candidate.  Interested candidates made speeches or presentations to their class, saying why they would make a great School council representative.  Each  pupil in their class then voted for the person they thought would be the best school council member. Each class teacher counted everyone's vote,  and the person who was chosen got crowned the class representative.'' YEAH ''!  Congratulations to them all.  We have no doubt they will work hard for their classes all year.

Walk to school.

This year,  St.Joseph's school is taking part in the international Walk to school month.  Mrs Lee thinks it is important that all her students should be well educated and healthy, so during October, once a week, on Thursday mornings, some of the staff have volunteered to meet and escort children to school.   This 15 minutes exercise is good for our health, helps us to get to know children from other year groups and will also cut down on traffic  outside the school gates on those mornings!   Who knows, maybe it will encourage more people to walk each day, even if only a part of their journey.  Will you join us?
We walk to school to safe the invirament.

The prayer garden

Two weeks ago our gardening club started work on our prayer garden. Mrs Naughton and the club (from all different year groups) went to Poplars garden centre to look for plants to brighten up our garden. Many ideas were given to Mrs Lee and we have agreed to put a shelter over our lady Mary to show respect. Benches were brought up, everyone was with the idea. Miss O'Leary's Grandad will be working in the garden to help make it our own. A Learning Log task is going out over the next couple of weeks for suggestions of prayers, poems or pictures to go on display.  We will keep you updated on the progress!

Here is a picture of Mrs Murphy's new office.

Very nice Mrs Murphy.
Sadly we were not able to take a picture of Mrs Lee's office, due to the fact it isn't completed yet but when it is, we will take a picture of it, and maybe interview Mrs Lee and Mrs Murphy about their new work spaces.

Fruit and Veg

Do you ever wonder how to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day? Doctors recommend it!

To eat fruit and vegetables means to give yourself vitamin C. Vitamin C stops you from catching nasty diseases like scurvy! It also keeps your skin soft, shiny and smooth! So how do we fit it into fruit and veg into our routine? This is how!

Breakfast- Have a fruity drink! Try some O-mazing orange juice! Also sprinkle some fruity toppings on your cereal.
Lunch- Mix and match! Try some pasta with vegetables or a colourful fruit salad! Also remember breaktime is a opportunity to eat some fruit as well!
Dinner- Brighten up your plate with a rainbow of vegetables!

So munch away on some fabulous fruit or very healthy vegetables! An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

How to treat others.

you should always respect others all the time so they can respect you in a nice way back. smile at them and try to cheer them up always. whenever you can see someone crying or sitting alone you should always go up to them and ask what is the matter with them, try and make them laugh and see if they would like to join in your game. to treat adults (teachers) always answer them if they ask you a question and say sorry and thankyou if you said something or did something rude and sa thankyou when they done or gave you something. that would be a good way to treat others so they can treat you a good way.

Mrs Bingham in Berlin

Mrs Bingham recently went to Germany with 11 other Modern Foreign Language teachers, after receiving a CONGRATULATIONS LETTER from Comenius, who promote languages. However, before she was informed she had to apply and say how it would benefit the school kids. "It was a VERY long application form" She said, when interviewed by Eloise, Tino and Monika, 6SR.
What happened when you got there?
"We had a group meeting immediately and we had some traditional German dinner which was white asparagus, potatoes, and schnitzel"

Did you stay at a hotel or where you provided with living accomodation?

Year 6 leaving

Year 6 are sadly having to leave St Joseph's to make their new start at their chosen high school. They have been learning so much in the past four years in St Joseph's but also very relieved to be having a fresh start. We have interviewed a year six student, Aoife :
How does it feel to leave such a great school?
"It's heart-breaking because I'm leaving such inspirational teachers and friends"
Do you think you might make some new friends or stick with old ones?
" Old ones because I know them too well to leave them behind."
Are you going to make any new changes in high school?
"My behavior because I had my moments"
Do you think you are prepared for high school?
"No because there might be some scary kids there."
Goodbye blog club.

Building Project

A few days ago builders came and started work on Mrs Lee's office, extending that office so  Mrs. Murphy(deputy head) will be taking over half of the existing one.  Between the offices there will be a wall.  The project is not finished though when it is I'm sure it will look better.

Outstanding olympia

On Wednesday 11th July yr 6 and the senior choir performed  in the Year 6 production,Olympia. They chose Olympia to link in with the 2012 Olympics which are in London this year. There were lots of songs as well as dancing in the production. Grace in 6MG, who played Hippodamia, lost her voice but still put on a very good performance.  The production showed many of Year 6 aren't just pretty faces! Congratulations to everyone involved!  Well done to everybody who won a prize in the raffle.

Four Days Til' Summer Holidays!

There are now only four days until the end of the school year. Unfortunately we have to say goodbye to our school's year 6s. The year sixes now have a big step to go into their high schools. Sadly some of the children are not going to the same schools as their friends and have to settle in and make new ones. We hope for the best of the children as they grow up and move on.

The Leavers Disco

The invitations to the Year Six Leavers' disco were sent out on the 4 July and everyone received their invites through the post. All the Year Six pupils are very excited about this fabulous event. It will be very hard to decide what each and everyone of them will be wearing. On Wednesday 17 July, the hall will be filled with Year Six party animals. It's guaranteed to be the best night of the school year but don't stay up too late! Kelsi

luton torch

Luton gazed upon the torch as it passed their eyes, unfortunately they were not allowed to
touch it. Looking at it they took a step back into time and looked how its changed over the years. Michelle.G 5PC

Bye-Bye Miss.Donaldson and Mrs.Brook

After two years of teaching in St.Josephs Miss Donaldson is going to leave us and go to Northern Ireland because she said she misses all her family and friends. "I'm hoping to get another teaching job in Ireland," Miss.Donaldson said. That's not all who's leaving, Mrs.Brook after many years of teaching is going to retire and everyone is going to miss her and she's going to miss her new friends staff and pupils. Both teachers are going to stay until the end of the year and they're hopefully going to visit us some day, they need to pack their bags and get ready. HAPPY TRAVELLING !

The Luton carnival!

On the the 8th of July, Luton had the Olympic Torch and the carnival wowo! The carnival was not at the normal time because of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year, so the carnival was moved to the weekend when the Olympic Torch went through the town. Unfortunately, the weather was not great because it rained but cleared a little. There was a lot of stands to buy food, wands and drinks, and lots of entertainment - magic tricks, music, funfair etc. A memorable celebration.
